Doing this research has helped me understand my fear better.
Now I know the specific clown that bothers me. That’s the Auguste clown. Which has been greatly shaped by Albert Fratelinni.
The Fratelinni Brothers were a famous trio of French clowns.

The key to leaping in this strip was to be the first clown to ever wear the red nose. Which makes this gag kind of the bootstrap paradox, seeing that it was Albert Fratelinni that started it.
